Is online notarization actually legal in Maryland?
Yes. Maryland authorized Remote Online Notarization with HB 11, effective October 1, 2020. The relevant statute is §§18-101 to 18-225. A document notarized online by a Maryland-commissioned online notary has the same legal effect as an in-person notarization.
Do I need to be physically located in Maryland?
No — you do not need to be in Maryland. The notary must be physically located in Maryland at the time of the act, but you (the signer) can be anywhere in the world. This is a defining feature of §18-214.
What kind of ID do I need?
A current government-issued photo ID: Maryland driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or military ID. Maryland requires "satisfactory evidence" of identity; we meet it through credential analysis (ID scan) plus live biometric facial recognition matching you to your ID photo.
Are there documents that cannot be notarized online in Maryland?
