Is online notarization actually legal in Tennessee?
Yes. Tennessee authorized Remote Online Notarization with Public Chapter 931, effective July 1, 2019. The relevant statute is Tenn. Code §§8-16-310 to 8-16-307. A document notarized online by a Tennessee-commissioned online notary has the same legal effect as an in-person notarization.
Do I need to be physically located in Tennessee?
No — you do not need to be in Tennessee. The notary must be physically located in Tennessee at the time of the act, but you (the signer) can be anywhere in the world. This is a defining feature of §8-16-310.
What kind of ID do I need?
A current government-issued photo ID: Tennessee driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or military ID. Tennessee requires "satisfactory evidence" of identity; we meet it through credential analysis (ID scan) plus live biometric facial recognition matching you to your ID photo.
Are there documents that cannot be notarized online in Tennessee?
