Is online notarization actually legal in Vermont?
Yes. Vermont authorized Remote Online Notarization with Act 171 of 2021 (Adj. Sess.), effective July 1, 2022. The relevant statute is §§5301 to 5360. A document notarized online by a Vermont-commissioned online notary has the same legal effect as an in-person notarization.
Do I need to be physically located in Vermont?
No — you do not need to be in Vermont. The notary must be physically located in Vermont at the time of the act, but you (the signer) can be anywhere in the world. This is a defining feature of §5379.
What kind of ID do I need?
A current government-issued photo ID: Vermont driver's license or state ID, U.S. passport, or military ID. The statute requires "satisfactory evidence" of identity; we meet this through credential analysis (ID scan) plus knowledge-based authentication (KBA) pulled from public records.
Are there documents that cannot be notarized online in Vermont?
