Remote Online Notarization Legality Guide: New York

Background

On February 25, 2022, the governor signed Senate Bill 7780, authorizing remote notaries public commissioned in the state to remotely notarize electronic documents.  Senate Bill 7780 enacts a “temporary” version of Executive Law Section 135-c that is effective until January 30, 2023, and replaces it with a “permanent” version of Section 135-c.  On January 31, 2023, new regulations will go into effect with additional requirements for electronic notaries.
