Although Alabama Notaries are not able to perform traditional Remote Online Notarization, you are still able to perform a version of Remote Notarization that most refer to as RIN (Remote Ink Notarization).

Commencing July 1, 2021, Alabama Notaries have the authority to conduct remote notarizations specifically for acknowledgments under a process known as Remote Ink Notarization. Here are the essential steps to guide you in becoming a remote Notary in Alabama:

1. First, you must already hold a valid commission as a traditional Notary Public.
2. Next, carefully choose videoconferencing technology that aligns with the state’s prescribed requirements.

You will need to follow the guidelines in the Alabama Notary Handbook and in accordance with Act 2021-319.

The following requirements are unique to Alabama in comparison to RON:

• An original wet signature will need to be signed directly onto the document
• In addition to KBA authentication, the signer will also need to provide a 2nd form of Government ID
• An attestation that the Alabama Notary was physically located in the state
• The signer will need mail the document to the notary, for them to then apply their signature and seal

Please note that Alabama citizens are still able to have their documents notarized online (through RON, and not RIN), albeit from Online Notaries in other states.

How to Become an Online Notary in Alaska

Commencing January 1, 2021, Alaskan Notaries are eligible to seek authorization for remote online notarizations (RONs). To embark on the journey of becoming a Remote Notary in Alaska, adhere to the subsequent steps:

2. Engage in a contractual agreement with a RON technology provider that aligns with state stipulations.

Colorado Notaries have been able to register to perform remote online notarizations (RONs) since December 31, 2020 (the beginning of 2021). If you are trying to become a Colorado Online Notary, you need to follow these steps.

2. Complete a RON training course from the Colorado Secretary of State.

How to Become an Online Notary in Florida

Since January 1 of 2020, Florida Notaries have been able to register to perform remote online notarizations (RONs). If you want to become an online Notary in Florida, here are the steps you must take:

Already have a traditional commission.
Complete a RON Training Course.
Get a $25,000 surety bond + $25,000 E&O insurance policy.
Select a state-approved RON technology provider (like BlueNotary).
Complete the Florida Department of State registration form.
Pay a $10 registration fee.
Once you have become a registered online notary, you will be able to perform online notarizations for documents.

Do You Have to Take a Course to Become an Online Notary Public in Florida?

Yes, it is a requirement to take a 2 hour state approved course in the state of Florida.

How to Become an Online Notary in Georgia

Georgia does not allow RON (Remote Online Notarization), but it accepts properly performed online notarization by certified notaries from other states in the nation. Consequently, an online notarization conducted by a notary commissioned in a state with a RON statute is legal and executable in Georgia if carried out in compliance with the state’s laws.

How to Become an Online Notary in Illinois

As of January 1, 2024, new Illinois Notary laws have come into effect, allowing for individuals to apply to notarize electronic documents remotely by means of audio-visual communication. To become a Remote Online Notary in the state of Illinois you can follow the steps below:

1. Hold a commission as a traditional Notary Public (or apply for both commissions simultaneously).
   Successfully complete and pass the state-required training and exam.
   Contract or sign up with an Electronic Notarization System Provider (such as BlueNotary).
2. Take the oath of office.
3. Adjust your surety bond amount to $30,000. You will also need to fill out form I 263 or I 264 (Notary Public Bond), signed and certified by a qualified bond company.
4. Complete and submit the application form, including your:
   oath
   course completion certificate
   a copy of your electronic seal and signature
   a legible photocopy of your driver’s license or state ID card
   form I 263 or I264
   $15 application filing fee.

(Starting August 1, 2024, Illinois residents applying to be Notary Public or Electronic Notary Public are required to use their online application.)

4. Provide proof of your eSeal/stamp by submitting the Stamp Registration Form within 45 days of your application approval. You may submit this form with your initial application.

How to Become an Online Notary in New York

Starting on January 31, 2023, Notaries have been able to apply to perform Remote Online Notarizations in New York. In order to become an Online Notary Public in NY, follow the steps below.

How to Become an Online Notary in Utah

As of January 27, 2023, These are the requirements to become a Remote Online Notary in the state of Utah. First off, you already need to be a commissioned notary through the state.. If you want to become a remote online Notary in Utah, you’ll need to follow these steps below.

1. Fill out the Application Form
2. Select a Utah State Approved Remote Notary Vendor
3. Increase your existing notarial bond to $10,000 of coverage. A notary can contact the Utah SoS if they are unsure who they’re bonded through.

5. Submit your Application, bond rider, and PDF file sample document containing your electronic signature and seal to [email protected].
